Dive Footage: Pool Dive in East Grand Rapids High School with Grand Rapids SCUBA Club

Episode 29 – Dive Video: New York Shipwreck in Lake Huron

Watch Jim Norton, host of Talking Scuba, as he wreck dives Lake Huron’s New York, a wooden steamer who foundered in heavy seas in 1876. The New York is located in 120ft/37M of water and is recommended for only advance scuba divers. UW videographer/director Johnny B Allen was there to captured the splendid beauty of the wreck during Jim’s diving adventures. After reaching the 100-foot depth, the sight of an enormous boiler loomed before the two divers. Jim and Johnny peered down a huge hole that was left by a missing smokestack. To their surprise, along the deck was an intact,  wooden arch hovering over their heads. According to Cris Kohl, these arches were often used as bracing in the early Great Lakes steamers. As Jim and Johnny approached the stern of the ship they dropped down to catch a glimpse of the prop, hiding in the shadows and covered in zebra mussels. The wreck, according to Cris Kohl, author of The 100 Best Great lakes Shipwrecks, was discovered and identified by the Great Lakes Shipwreck Exploration Group – headed up by Gary Biniecki, Tim Juhl, and Jim and Pat Stayer. In 1986 Jim and Pat Stayer assisted in the creation of the Sanilac Shores Underwater Preserve and were founding members of the Sanilac Shores Preserve Council.

This dive adventure was made possible by Bruno’s Dive Shop off their incredibly comfortable dive boat “Great Lakes Diver”. John Ford Lake Dive Footage

We had a great opportunity to dive in a private inland lake called John Ford located in Newaygo, Michigan. We saw a wide variety of inland fish and fresh water jellyfish. This lake is very safe to dive in since the property owners  don’t allow gas power engines on the lake. We would like to thank the property owners for allowing to dive it.
